Free Christmas parking decision due next week

Killarney business owners and residents will have to wait at least one more week to learn what special parking arrangements may be put in place for the Christmas period.
Last week Tralee Municipal Council announced that its annual free parking period for Christmas will begin in Tralee on Monday, November 30 and will continue until Monday, January 4, in Kerry County Council car parks.
At Wednesday’s online Killarney Municipal District meeting manager Angela McAllen was asked by elected members if Killarney had similar plans to follow the county town.
Some of the councillors were calling for free all day parking, like the county town, in the run up to Christmas, while more wanted a two-hour limit placed on free parking to prevent town centre employees from taking up spaces all day.
Ms McAllen said she would “take away [the councillor's] concerns over the next few days and revert to the members”.
Last year the Council offered around 1,300 free parking spaces each day between 9am and 11am, a further 1,000 free spaces were allowed between 9am and 1pm, and 500 were offered as ‘all day free parking’.
These are the finer details that Ms McAllen and her team are looking into.
An announcement is expected by Mayor Brendan Cronin by the end of next week.
