A local jeweller is calling on the people of Killarney to get behind her football team and join a virtual walk.

Sarah Dineen runs Caragh Jewellers on Plunkett St. She is also the treasurer of Knocknagree Ladies Football Club.

The north-Cork club reached the junior semi-finals of the Cork County Championship this season but their run of success also came at a cost. The girls face additional physiotherapy and training bills. They also need to pay for post-match meals and other expenses related to running a successful club.

But like every other club, COVID-19 has hit them hard and it has not been possible to run fundraisers during the year.

Instead they are inviting people to walk, jog or cycle, one, two, five or 10 kilometres during the month of October in a virtual challenge.

“We want to continue to be able to promote ladies sports,” Sarah told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was expensive maintaining the club this year and we are unable to run our usual fundraisers.”

Participants can send a photo of the walk/run event, time recorded or the scenery, to Club PRO Maura O’Mahony on WhatsApp to 085 1450533.

“Everyone who sends in any photo will be included into a draw for some spot prizes. Please observe Social Distancing if heading out with friends,” said Maura. “To donate please click the link to a GoFundMe page pinned to the top of our club’s Facebook page and Twitter account on completion of your walk, run or cycle. All funds raised will go directly to the running of the club.”

Contactless payments launched on Local Link services

Passengers using TFI Local Link Kerry services in Killarney and across the county can now pay for their journeys using contactless card payments.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) confirmed the rollout this week, allowing commuters to simply tap their debit card, credit card, or mobile devices, such as Apple Pay and Google Pa, when boarding.

The move is designed to offer more convenience for those using high-frequency rural and regional routes.

In Killarney, the new payment option will be available on the TFI Anseo town services, which have seen a significant increase in passenger numbers since their introduction.

The contactless system is currently available for single journey fares, while those using daily or weekly passes can continue to use the Leap website or the TFI Leap Top Up App.
Alan O’Connell, General Manager of TFI Local Link Kerry, welcomed the modernisation of the fleet.

“The introduction of contactless payments is another welcome step forward for public transport in Kerry,” he said. “It complements other major projects in the county, including the expansion of TFI Local Link services and the delivery of TFI Anseo in Killarney, which is proving to be another great initiative.”

While the new technology offers a modern alternative, traditional payment methods are not being phased out. Cash payments, TFI Leap cards, and Free Travel Cards all remains fully valid across the network.
