There have been no further cases of COVID-19 at a Killarney school this week following the confirmation last Friday that one child had tested positive.

Rory Darcy, Principal of St Oliver’s National School in Ballycasheen, told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday) that only one case was confirmed and they followed all the necessary Public Health advice.

All parents were immediately informed when the school became aware of the positive case.

The child in question wasn’t in school for a number of days so the risk to the school community was very minimal and no classes were sent home as they weren’t considered close contacts.

“There have been no further cases,” Mr Darcy told the Killarney Advertiser.

“It is just one case and the last thing we want to do is sensationalise it. We encourage people to go for testing because that breaks the cycle of the virus. It’s going to be with us for a while and the last thing we want is to discourage people from going. We need to mind each other.”

He added that the school community rallied together since the news became known.

“It’s been a great example of cooperation between parents, school staff and the HSE. We’re very proud of the way people have worked together.”
