226 COVID-19 cases diagnosed in Kerry

There’s been a further 38 deaths from COVID-19 since yesterday (Tuesday), and there’s now 226 diagnosed cases in Kerry – which is up 7.

This evening (Wednesday), the Health Protection Surveillance Centre revealed that there’s now 1,068 new cases in Ireland which includes tests results from both Ireland and Germany.

And with the latest figures from Germany included, there are now a total of 12,547 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.

Of the deaths;

  • 29 deaths located in the east, six in the west, three in the south of the country
  • the people included 22 males and 16 females
  • the median age of today’s reported deaths is 84
  • 28 people were reported as having underlying health conditions

 

There have now been 444 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland.

 

As of 1pm Wednesday, the HPSC has been notified of the following cases;

  • An additional 657 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported by Irish laboratories
  • An additional 411 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reported by a laboratory in Germany

 

Today’s data from the HPSC, as of midnight, Monday, April 13 (11,261 cases), reveals:

  • 55% are female and 45% are male, with 413 clusters involving 2,244 cases
  • the median age of confirmed cases is 48 years
  • 1,968 cases (18%) have been hospitalised
  • Of those hospitalised, 280 cases have been admitted to ICU
  • 2,872 cases are associated with healthcare workers
  • Dublin has the highest number of cases at 5,850 (52% of all cases) followed by Cork with 829 cases (7%)
  • Of those for whom transmission status is known: community transmission accounts for 52%, close contact accounts for 42%, travel abroad accounts for 6%

 

“We are continuing to monitor the course of this disease across a range of indicators – not only in the number of confirmed cases and deaths reported but also through hospital and ICU admissions, clusters and patterns of transmission,” Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said.

“While a number of these parameters are going in a positive direction, it is clear that we need to keep going in our efforts, on an individual level, to limit the spread of this virus.”

Deenagh Lodge to host Alzheimer’s Memory Walk

Killarney National Park will serve as the venue for this year’s Kerry Alzheimer’s Memory Walk on Sunday, September 20.

Participants will gather at the Deenagh Lodge ahead of an 11.00am start to complete a 5km scenic route through the park.

The event takes place on the eve of World Alzheimer’s Day as part of a nationwide series of walks supported by Aviva.


Now in its seventh year, the initiative raises vital funds for The Alzheimer Society of Ireland to support local dementia services, including daycare centres, family carer training, social clubs, dementia cafés, and the national helpline.

Last year, nearly 3,000 walkers across Ireland raised over €240,000 for the cause.


The Kerry walk will be led by local champions Kathriona Sheehan, Niamh Murphy, Lynda Phillips, and Melissa Molyneaux, who are walking in support of all those living with dementia.
“We are proud to lead our annual Alzheimer’s Memory Walk supported by Aviva to help fund local dementia services in Kerry,” they said. “The event is about community and helping spread awareness by walking together to raise vital funds for care, support, and hope for the days ahead. Join us in Killarney on Sunday, 20th September to show your support.”


With over 40 walks scheduled across Ireland, members of the public can walk in memory of a loved one or to show solidarity. Further details and registration are available at memorywalk.ie.

Style reigned supreme at Killarney Racecourse as local resident Gary Moynihan and Offaly’s Sylwia Novak captured the top honours at the Canella Lane Best Dressed Day.

Moynihan, a local neuromuscular therapist, claimed Best Dressed Gentleman in a made-to-measure six-button burgundy double-breasted suit with a navy check from Saville Menswear in Cork. He completed the winning look with a shirt and paisley tie from Simply Suits Killarney and brown derby shoes from Pavers at the Killarney Outlet Centre.
Best Dressed Lady was awarded to Novak, a hospital personal assistant from Tullamore, who wore a red polka-dot ensemble and custom hat designed by milliner Rita Daly, featuring sustainable jewellery made from recycled plastic.
Canella Lane owner Ciana Aspell praised the high standard of fashion on the day, while Killarney Racecourse Manager Karl McCay thanked the sponsors and racegoers for their support.
With the summer season now wrapped up, the team at Killarney Racecourse is gearing up for the October Festival on October 4 and 5, featuring its first-ever Student Raceday with SPIN South West on the Monday. Early ticket booking is advised.
