Funding sought for CCTV in Killarney

Plans for CCTV in Killarney town centre have taken a step closer after a Killarney Municipal District meeting was told that funds for three CCTV schemes have been applied for.
Cllr Niall Kelleher asked Wednesday’s meeting if there was any progress on the proposal.
Kerry County Council officials confirmed that the Council had applied to the Department of Justice for funding and the application is currently being assessed.
“Our night time economy is getting busier and there have been a number of assaults,” Cllr Kelleher told the meeting. “It is imperative for our town that these CCTV screens are provided as soon as possible.”
The Data Protection Commission is currently carrying out a national study on the use of CCTV and other technologies by local authorities and An Garda Síochána for security and crime prevention.
Once the results of that study are known and department funding is confirmed, the Council will have to follow normal procurement and tender rules before CCTV could become operational in Killarney.
