Over 240 people took part in the 17th annual walk from Kenmare to Killarney on Sunday in aid of Multiple Sclerosis Ireland South Kerry Branch.

Local man John O’Shea from Muckross founded the walk which to date has raised €300,000.

Funds raised from the walk along the Old Kenmare Road, will go to MS services for the South Kerry area, and John explained that it’s an event which brings great crowds every year.

“We had a great day and a great turnout,” he said. “We will have a full account of the money raised by early December and hope to run a presentation night before Christmas.”

And he said he’d like to thank all those who helped to make it a success.

“We’d like to thank the Gleneagle, O’Callaghan’s Coaches for providing transport, O’Sullivan’s Outdoor Shop in New St., without their support it wouldn’t be possible.”

SERVICE IN KOSOVO: Killarney natives Lt Col Ian Harrington and Capt Shane O’Neill are currently deployed with the Irish Defence Forces as part of the NATO-led KFOR mission in Kosovo. Lt Col Harrington, from Loughguitane, and Capt O’Neill, from Killarney town, are among a contingent of Irish personnel serving at the mission’s headquarters in Camp Film City, Pristina.
The Irish Defence Forces have participated in the UN-mandated peace-keeping mission since 1999, focusing on maintaining a secure environment and freedom of movement for all citizens in the region. The presence of these local officers in key staff appointments continues Killarney’s long-standing connection to international peacekeeping efforts. Earlier this month, Irish personnel in Pristina marked St Patrick’s Day with a special medal ceremony to recognize their service and contribution to the mission.

Sem staff gather to mark Ed O’Neill’s retirement

Staff from St Brendan’s College gathered at the Randles Court Hotel last weekend to celebrate the retirement of their colleague, Ed O’Neill.

Although Mr O’Neill officially finished his teaching duties in Physical Education and History at the end of the school year last May, his fellow teachers and friends held the formal send-off this week to mark his departure from the school.
Mr O’Neill’s career at “The Sem” spanned 31 years, having first joined the teaching staff in 1995. Over three decades, he became a central figure in the school community, mentoring generations of students both in the classroom and on the sports field. He was widely respected by staff and pupils alike for his professional approach and his dedication to the college.
The retirement function provided an opportunity for past and present colleagues to acknowledge his significant contribution to the school since the mid-1990s.
