It’s out of the blue uniforms and time to get into the glitzy gear for members of An Garda Siochana – as details of this year’s Garda Black Tie Gala Ball have been announced.

The Killarney Oaks Hotel on Friday, October 4 is the place to be for a champagne and canapé reception from 6.30pm, followed by a five course sit down meal.

And the event is open to the public with proceeds of this year’s event going to the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre.

The Kerry Division of An Garda Siochana, under the direction of Chief Superintendent Eileen Foster, are delighted to be hosting a Black Tie Gala Ball, explained Garda Gillian MacEoin, who is helping to organise the event.

“Last year’s Garda Ball was such a success that we had profits left over which we donated to the Kerry Mountain Rescue and the Kerry/Cork Cancer Link Bus.

“This year we have chosen to nominate the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre as the beneficiary of our ball. All profits made from ticket sales for this year will go to this centre.”

The wonderfully entertaining ‘The Bentley Boys Band’ will have everyone on their feet after the meal, dancing into the night, she added.

The Kerry Garda Dress Dance used to be a yearly event spanning decades, and the Kerry Division resurrected it last year.

“Last year’s ball was such a fabulous success so this year’s gala ball is expected to be no different. We have fabulous spot prizes, kindly donated by many businesses in Kerry, and we will have a professional photographer on hand that night to capture all the glitz and glamour. All guests will then be given a professional photograph of themselves at the ball as a keepsake.”

Tickets are priced at €70 each and are available from any of the Kerry Garda Black Tie Gala Ball committee members in any Garda Station in Kerry.

Green light for Torc Dinis walkway

Planning approval has been granted for a long-awaited lakeside walkway and cycleway connecting Torc and Dinis inside Killarney National Park.

An Coimisiún Pleanála confirmed permission for the elevated platform project, which will complete the popular scenic loop while removing a dangerous 800-metre section along the busy N71 Killarney to Kenmare road.
Walkers and cyclists currently have to navigate narrow bends alongside heavy vehicular traffic and tour buses to complete the circuit between the Dinis and Torc car parks.
Mayor of Killarney John O’Donoghue welcomed the decision, calling it a transformative development for the region: “Since beginning in the Council in 2021, this has been one of my priorities as an issue I inherited from my predecessor Michael Gleeson, he being the first person to initially pursue the idea. I have repeatedly kept it on the agenda at Council meetings and now delighted to see we finally have positive news as this decision, which has been long overdue and eagerly awaited, will prove transformative for the area.”
Mayor O’Donoghue added: “The path, which will be on the lakeside, will offer views to rival those anywhere in the world and I have no doubt will prove very popular with locals and visitors alike. Huge credit is due to Kerry County Council and the NPWS for their co-operation on the issue. Once the decision has passed through its statutory waiting period, the design and tender stage can begin.”
The project, which will be built on a raised platform to protect the natural habitat beneath, will also be fully accessible for people with mobility issues. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce also welcomed the green light, noting that the completed loop will create a major safe attraction showcasing Muckross Lake, Dinis Cottage, and the Old Weir Bridge.
