Lakers to host Tralee Warriors on Wednesday night

Published

Scotts Lakers Killarney will host Garveys Tralee Warriors in a pre-season challenge match in Killarney Sports Centre this Wednesday night, September 11 at 8pm.

Both sides have been busy preparing for the new season which commences in the next few weeks. Warriors enjoyed success in their own pre-season tournament in Tralee at the weekend with victories over Sligo, Ballincollig and Neptune. Scotts Lakers enjoyed an impressive win over Limerick Sports Eagles last week despite lining out with just one foreign player.

Garveys Tralee Warriors, coached by Pat Price, are the reigning Super League champions and are expected to bring a star-studded line-up to Killarney for this match. New American Jonathan Lawton is tipped to make a big impact in the league this year and he is joined by Keith Jumper, who lined out with Tralee last year. Former Killorglin players Daniel Jokubaitis and Ivan Bogdanovic also add strength to the Warriors side who will also be boosted with the inclusion of Irish players Kieran Donaghy, Eoin Quigley, Fergal O'Sullivan and Darren O'Sullivan.

Scotts Lakers, under new coach Shane McCarthy, will parade their new foreign signings on Wednesday night. American Aaron Jackson landed in Killarney last weekend and he will be joined on court by Toby Christensen from Denmark and Spaniard Victor Martínez.

Local players Mark Greene, Andrew Fitzgerald, Séamus Brosnan and Cian Clernon will feature for the Lakers again this season while former Blue Demons players Carlton Cuff and Brian O'Neill will give them extra strength in depth. Both impressed in the recent challenge match in Limerick with Cuff contributing 26 points while O'Neill added 15.

Doors will open in Killarney Sports Centre on Wednesday night at 7.30pm and admission is €5 for adults and €3 for children.

Season tickets for Scotts Lakers home games will also be available to purchase on the night.

Grady demands Killarney traffic review

Killarney councillor Martin Grady has called for an urgent review of traffic management across the town following severe delays along the Muckross Road during the morning rush hour.

Constituents living along Muckross Road, Woodlawn, and outer Muckross areas raised serious concerns with the local representative, reporting that motorists now face delays of over 30 minutes to travel from Flesk Bridge or Woodlawn Cross into Killarney town.

The situation is causing major disruption for parents doing school runs and commuters traveling to work every morning.

“This level of congestion is simply not acceptable,” said Cllr Grady. “I have been contacted by constituents who are experiencing significant delays every morning, with parents trying to get their children to school and people trying to commute into work being caught in traffic for prolonged periods.”

Cllr Grady urged Kerry County Council to look closely at the operation and light sequencing along the route.

“I am calling for a review of the traffic situation along the Muckross Road, including the operation and sequencing of the traffic lights and whether there are any other obstructions or traffic management issues contributing to the delays,” he said.

He stressed that the gridlock is not isolated to one approach road, but affects the entire urban area as population and traffic volumes continue to rise year on year.

“But this issue goes beyond the Muckross Road. Killarney as a whole is experiencing increasing levels of traffic congestion across the town. The people of Killarney have been suffering with traffic for far too long, and the situation is getting worse,” Cllr Grady said.

“Our population is growing and traffic volumes are increasing year on year. We need to look at the bigger picture and develop a proper traffic management plan for Killarney. We need to identify where the problems are, examine how traffic is being managed across the town and put measures in place to improve traffic flow. The current situation has gone beyond what is acceptable for residents, commuters and visitors to Killarney.”
