Horsepower of a different kind is set to take over Killarney Racecourse on Sunday as the town’s annual classic car show rolls into the venue two days after the summer horse racing festival.

Organisers, Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC), have promised a host of new activities for this year’s fifth annual event.

While the gates open at 11am, the highlight of the day will be a parade of all the participating cars, tractors and motorbikes along the ambulance track on the course, at 3pm.

Kilgarvan Motor Museum will bring several of its display cars for the first time and local motorcycle racer Kevin Doherty and his colleagues will have their road-racing bikes on static display.

Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC) will use the event to launch their annual Autocross at Tralee Racecourse over the August Bank Holiday weekend.

KDMC members will also display some of their rally cars at the show.

There will be a special display dedicated to the late Maurice Nagle, a long-time member of both KVCVC and KDMC. Some of his historic rally cars, including his famous Ford Cortina, so often used as a road closed car on local rallies, will be on display.

One of the oldest cars on show will be a Ford Model T from the 1930s.

Also new for 2019 is an autojumble section where spare part dealers will be selling unusual bits.

“It is a great family day out,” said event PRO Tom Leslie.

Tickets for the club’s annual raffle – first prize a 40 year old Ford 2600 tractor – in aid of local charities like ACT for Meningitis and Killarney Micro Track will be on sale at the show too.

The Killarney Advertiser’s Sean Moriarty will act as MC for the parade.

Spring welcomed with trad music at Muckross House

A special musical celebration titled ‘St. Brigid and the Arrival of Spring’ took place recently in the great hall of Muckross House.

The event, presented by the Muckross House Research Library on behalf of the Trustees, featured performances by world-famous tin whistle player Mary Bergin, master harper Kathleen Loughnane, and fiddle and bouzouki player Mick Conneely.
The evening included a repertoire of jigs, reels, and slow airs. During the performance, Kathleen Loughnane shared historical insights into the Belfast Harp Festival of 1792, where Edward Bunting recorded ancient tunes to preserve them. She also highlighted the story of a North Kerry man named Lyons who served as the harper to Lord Antrim.
Former Mayor of Killarney, Michael Gleeson, was among the attendees and praised the event for its informative and enjoyable atmosphere. He noted that the music helped dispel the gloom of recent weather and extended his thanks to Patricia and the organizing team.
The performers brought distinguished backgrounds to the Killarney stage. Mary Bergin, originally from Dublin and now living in Connemara, received an Honorary Doctorate from UCD in 2022. Kathleen Loughnane, a native of
