Duck race to make a splash in Killarney

DUCK RACE: ‘The Great Killarney Duck Race’ will raise funds for Kilcummin National School on June 14.

Killarney has a world class horse racing reputation, champion jockeys and trainers are part of the town’s fabric - but now townsfolk can prepare themselves for an alternative event - as Duck Racing is coming to Killarney later this month.

‘The Great Killarney Duck Race’ will raise funds for Kilcummin National School and is ‘con-duck-ted’ by the school’s Parents Association.

The June 14 event, will see hundreds of ducks take on the challenges of the Deenagh River, Port Road, starting at the playground bridge.

Over 300 ducks are expected to enter the race and it promises to be great ‘quack’.

The Parents Association wanted to highlight a current ‘pre-duck-ament’ in the school – so organised this event to raise money to enhance existing facilities and help with the purchase of new equipment for the school.

"We were looking for a fun family event that everyone could enter and enjoy to finish off the school year," Derek O’Leary, Chairperson of the Kilcummin NS Parents Association, said. “We'll have a Best Dressed Duck costume prize for someone who makes the effort to go a bit quackers on the evening of the race.”

Fully-fledged racing ducks, with up-to-date ‘me-duck-al’ records are available to buy at Kilcummin Post Office and the Dungeon Bookshop in Killarney. Organisers will also have a pop up shop at the Market Cross tomorrow (Saturday) from 2pm - 4pm. Ducks can also be bought from 5.30pm - 6.30pm on the evening of the race too.

The race starts from the bridge at the playground on Port Road, across from the cathedral with the finish line at the bridge near the main entrance to Deenagh Lodge and the Demesne.

Participants can adopt a duck for €5 with first prize a one night family break in Kilkenny.

"It’s also such a good setting to run the race with clear views of the river on both banks of the river, so no excuse for not coming out to cheer on your duck," Derek, who supports the ed-duck-cation of local children, added.

Members of the Killarney Soroptimist Society visited the Rockmount Care Centre on Wednesday, to present a cheque for €3000 to Nurse Manager Mary Hussey.

The significant sum was raised during the society’s successful annual pancake morning held on Shrove Tuesday at the Killarney Avenue Hotel.
Rockmount Care Centre provides essential support as a dedicated day care facility for individuals living with Dementia and Alzheimer’s, serving many clients and families from the Killarney area.
These funds arrive at a vital time, as they are earmarked for the centre’s new sensory garden project, which is currently in the design phase.
Pictured at the presentation are Soroptimists members handing over the proceeds to Mary Hussey. The society extended their thanks to the Killarney Avenue Hotel and all those who supported the fundraiser to help make this donation possible.

Repair works for the Killarney Public Realm project officially commenced on Monday, April 20, following approval from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

This phase of the project, funded by the URDF, focuses on enhancing the streetscape and accessibility of both Main Street and Kenmare Place.
To allow the appointed contractors to carry out the investment safely, a section of the R-878 on Main Street, stretching from Kenmare Place to Plunkett Street, is now closed to traffic. This first period of construction is scheduled to run from April 20 until July 3.
Recognising the importance of the tourism season, the council has confirmed the street will fully reopen from July 4 to October 4 to accommodate peak summer traffic. Following this break, works will resume for a second period starting October 5 and running until December 4.
While vehicle diversions are in place, pedestrian access to all businesses and emergency service access will be maintained throughout the construction phases. Kerry County Council stated that these works are part of a wider programme to improve the safety and quality of the town centre and has thanked the public and local business owners for their cooperation during these essential improvements.
