A new club which is setting up this January plans to combat isolation and loneliness in the locality.

Killarney Lions Club have set up the first ever Kerry Clubs Fair which will be free and open to the public.

The aim is to give adults in Kerry an easy way to find out about activities they can be part of in the county.

The event, which takes place at Killarney Racecourse from 2pm – 5pm on January 20, will feature clubs and societies that people might like to participate in or volunteer with, be it for fun, recreation or just to be involved, explained Ronan Doyle, Killarney Lions Club President.

“The idea is to give people a chance to meet clubs and other organisations that are active in the community and hopefully find something they are interested in,” Ronan said.

“It could be that someone wants to try a new activity, or is new to the area, or wants to give back to their community through volunteering – whatever the reason, it will be a fun event and everyone is welcome to come along on the day.”

And, not only will the new club address isolation and loneliness that people may be experiencing, they also want to help improve health and well-being in the community.

Over 25 Clubs have already signed up to be part of the fair including Men’s Shed, First Responders, Irish Countrywomen’s Association, Tidy Towns, Southwest Counselling, Grace Fellowship, Ring of Kerry Cycle, Kerry Volunteer Centre, KDYS, Killarney Mountain Meitheal, Killarney Badminton Club, Girl Guides, Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, Kerry Stars, Workmen’s Rowing Club, Scouts, Ross Golf Club, South Kerry Community Games, Toastmasters, Order of Malta, Laune Mountaineering Club, Killarney Valley Classics and Vintage and Killarney Musical Society.

Clubs interested in participating can call 087 6256391 or email killarneylionsclub@gmail.com.

The annual Killarney Regatta Dance took place on September 25 as rowers, families and supporters came together to celebrate their successful year.

The racing was cancelled in September due to bad weather.

The Killarney Regatta is one of Ireland’s oldest rowing events, having first begun in 1788.

The dance took place at the Killarney Oaks Hotel where there was a lot of excitement and fun. Six rowing clubs, Fossa, Workman’s, St Brendan’s, Commercials, Flesk Valley, and Muckross, came together to celebrate the community and its shared history.

Amelia Counihan was crowned as the Regatta Queen.

The Queen represents the spirit pride and grace of the rowing community and has been a tradition in the club for generations.

Workman’s Rowing Club congratulated Amelia and described her as a woman who embodies everything that their tradition stands for.

The club said: “Queen is more than a title — it is a celebration of history, community, and the spirit of Killarney rowing.”
