The high density of school traffic on New Road was the focus of a safety campaign by Gardai this week.
As part of their School Safety Initiative, members of the local force set their sights on the busy street which accommodates four local schools.
The aim of the campaign is to reduce the risk of serious or fatal injury to children while walking, cycling or travelling in vehicles to school and a general reduction in road traffic offences, Sergeant Dermot O’Connell explained.
“Killarney Gardaí are continuing the implementation of their schools safety initiative with a further awareness campaign and targeted enforcement,” he said.
The operation will ensure that children are properly restrained, will detect motorists using mobile phones while driving, as well as identify and prosecute motorists who park dangerously causing a risks to pedestrians and other road users and enforce the one way system on New Road at school drop off and collection times.
“The operation will continue until Christmas, alternating between routes that experience busy school traffic, both morning and evening,” Sergeant O’Connell said.
