Griffin confident South Kerry greenway will go ahead

Tourism Minister Brendan Griffin says he is confident that the proposed south Kerry greenway will come to fruition. The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport is currently rolling out funding for greenways and the Kerry TD has indicated that Kerry would be well placed to access some of that funding.
Kerry County Council recently lodged planning for the 32km greenway between Glenbeigh and Renard. The development is expected to prove a major boon for tourism in the Iveragh Peninsula with knock-on effects anticipated in Killarney. The project isn’t without its opposition the but Griffin believes any outstanding issues will be resolved.
If the planning application is confirmed by An Bord Pleanála, Kerry County Council will be allowed to acquire the land necessary for the project via Compulsory Purchasing Orders (CPOs). In total, the development will affect 222 landholdings and 197 landowners. The Irish Farmer’s Association have described the council’s decision to proceed with CPOs as the “death knell” of the project.
A similar greenway also appears to be on the horizon for the north of the county. Tralee Municipal District has approved plans for a 10.3km route between Tralee and Fenit.
