Keep it local with Food Producers at Market Square

The newly redeveloped New Market Square continues to go from strength-to-strength and food lovers are in for a real treat at what is fast becoming one of the town’s favourite locations.

Hazel O’Malley and Ciara O’Connor brought their Old Market Flea to New Market Square in June and July and now, in conjunction with the Market Square Development Committee, they’re presenting their new venture: Food Producers at Market Square.

“It’s going to be for anyone producing food, such as fruit and veg, baked products, we have chutneys and jams and there will be street food as well,” Hazel explains. “We’re hoping people will come up and they can buy their weekly shopping, get their fruit and veg, and people on their lunch break can come and get a bite to eat.”

For the organisers and the committee behind the idea, it’s all about keeping it local.

“It’s small local businesses and it’s local people, both those who are established and those who are starting out,” Hazel says. “We want to promote the idea that Killarney has its own food culture and food producers.”

Check out Food Producers at Market Square on TODAY Friday, August 24 from 10am-2pm and every Friday thereafter.

Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone (KFMN) was one of seven local charities to receive funding from Ballybunion Golf Club Lady Captain Mags O’Sullivan’s Charity Golf Classic.

At a presentation on October 5, Mags O’Sullivan presented a cheque for €5,000 to KFMN at Ballybunion Golf Club.
The donation was made in memory of her late friend Angela Fahy, a former Lady Captain and President of the club, who passed away from Motor Neurone Disease.
Pat Kelleher and Christy Lehane accepted the cheque on behalf of KFMN and thanked Mags, Lady President Aideen O’Leary, and the organising committee for their generosity and hospitality.
He said the donation will provide vital support for the charity’s ongoing work assisting those living with Motor Neurone Disease in Kerry.
“Fundraising is becoming increasingly difficult, so this contribution makes a real difference,” he said.
