Gooch wins Kerry Person of the Year
LEGENDARY Killarney footballer Colm Cooper has been named 2018 Kerry Person of the Year.
2017 was a remarkable year for Cooper who led his club Dr Crokes to the All-Ireland Club Championship title in March. Crokes also went on to reclaim the Kerry Club Championship crown with victory over Kenmare before retaining their County Championship and County League titles in impressive fashion.
Gooch was a central figure throughout the campaign and was Crokes’ top scorer in the championship, despite being unable to start the final due to injury.
In spite of his fine form at club level, the Ardshanavooley native decided to step away from the Kerry fold in April. He bowed out as the leading Kerry scorer of all time having led the Kingdom to five All-Ireland titles.
It was a busy year for Cooper off the field as he released his autobiography in October and also established himself as a leading pundit on RTÉ’s GAA coverage.
The prestigious Kerry Person of the Year award, which has been handed out by the Kerry Association in Dublin every year since 1979, recognises people who have shown leadership, provided exceptional service to the community and brought honour to their county.
Former recipients include John B. Keane (1989), Micheál ó Muircheartaigh (1997) and Seán Kelly (2008).
