Gardai and Community Alert groups highlight home security

SOME 40 representatives of every Community Alert group in the Killarney, Mid Kerry, East Kerry and Kenmare areas gathered for the annual District Community Alert meeting in Torc Hotel, Lissivigeen, last week.
The meeting, which was also attended by Community Alert liaison gardaí, was chaired by Garda Finbarr Donovan, Killarney Garda Station. Dermot Cronin of Muintir na Tire gave a presentation on the new “Text Alert” system run by Muintir na Tire and the new “app” the group hopes to introduce in 2018. Mr Cronin spoke about the changes to the Senior Alert scheme and encouraged everyone to record serial numbers of any valuable property they own.
Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí gave a presentation on the latest crime statistics for the Killarney District and said he anticipated that a Garda CCTV system will be up and running by the end of 2018. He stated that resources are still an issue for An Garda Siochána but welcomed the fact that seven new probationary gardaí have started in Killarney in 2017.
Superintendent Murphy reminded people that An Garda Siochána is a 24/7 service and encouraged them to report any concerns they may have in relation to suspicious people or vehicles.
