Killarney graveyard gets green light
K
KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL is to go ahead with a Compulsory Purchase Order for the development of a new public graveyard for Killarney.
An Bord Pleanála ruled on Wednesday that the local authority has the right to go ahead and buy land at Knockeendubh.
The controversial site was the subject of an oral hearing two months ago.
Killarney has for many years now faced a crisis when it came to grave space, with dwindling spaces left at the existing graveyard in Aghadoe.
There remains a six-week period during which a judicial review of the process can be sought.
Among those welcoming the move was Councillor Michael Gleeson who said: “There is great urgency for the development of a new graveyard in Killarney as all of the existing public spaces are full.
“Any further undue delay will inevitably result in people being buried in graveyards some distance from the town and many relatives would find that situation unacceptable and upsetting.”
