LAST month 12 of the staff from the Killarney Plaza Hotel undertook a four-hour training course to learn CPR and AED use. The skills they learned have provided them with the ability to recognise someone who is in cardiac arrest and how to active the emergency chain of survival.

The Irish Heart Foundation-certified course was provided by the Heart of Killarney project in association with OC Safety Training. “For every minute someone isn't breathing with no pulse they lose 10% chance of survival,” stated spokesman Damien Baker, Heart of Killarney.
“By having these skills and using them before the ambulance arrives, they are giving people the best possible chances of survival.”

The Killarney Plaza Hotel is a key sponsor for both the Heart of Killarney project and the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit. “We would like to thanks Igor Van Reil and the staff and management of Killarney Plaza Hotel for their continued support,” said Leo O’Connor of the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit.

Meanwhile, the Heart of Killarney phone box AED project received a cheque for €2,000 at the recent Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle presentation night.

Damien and Leo thanked the committee. “The phone box AED project is taking off across the country and we are currently working with many town and villages across Ireland to help them get a phone box AED,” said Damien.

Three families taking centre stage with Killarney Musical Society

Killarney Musical Society’s upcoming production of ‘All Shook Up’ will feature multiple generations of three different families performing side by side.

The show will run from February 10 to 12 in the Gleneagle Arena. Tickets for the highly anticipated show are on sale now.
Music is well known to bring people of all ages together, and this is clearly evident within the Killarney Musical Society, where several families are sharing the stage this year.
The Spillane/Murray family boasts three generations in the production. Phil Spillane has been an active member since she joined KMS in September 1989.
This year, she performs alongside her daughter Amanda and her granddaughter Caoimhe, who is playing the character Lorraine. All three agree they are having great fun practising dance steps and harmonies together and will treasure this time forever.
Mother and daughter Annie and Alannah McIlroy are taking the stage together for the first time. Annie appeared in the 2023 production of Michael Collins, while Alannah joined the cast last year for Evita. They state that the best part of performing together is the quality time they share, not just during rehearsals but on the journeys to and from them, as both share a deep love for musicals.
Finally, the mother and daughter pair of Linda and Eilise O’Donoghue continue a family tradition. While Linda’s father was involved with KMS back in 1986, Linda herself joined in 2015 after being persuaded by her daughter Eilise, who has been a member since 2012. Before each performance, the two rely on each other: Eilise checks Linda’s hair and makeup, while Linda makes sure Eilise’s costume is perfect. They also enjoy practising their alto lines together, making the experience especially meaningful.
The society looks forward to welcoming audiences to the Gleneagle Arena for the three-night run of ‘All Shook Up’ next February.
