Swift action ensures safety as blaze rapidly brought under control
S
SUPER-SWIFT action by management and staff as well as rapid response by emergency services ensured the safety of all after a blaze broke out at a Killarney factory this afternoon.
Six units of Killarney and Killorglin fire service attended after a major fire occurred at a unit at the Tricel plant at Tiernaboul Industrial Estate.
Gardaí were quick to seal off the road and ensure free access for emergency vehicles. All staff were evacuated from the building and no injuries have been reported.
The fact that staff were so well drilled when it came to fire safety ensured Tricel’s emergency plan “worked like clockwork”, a spokeswoman told Killarney Advertiser. “The ESB cut power straight away so there were no electrical issues for the fire brigade,” she added.
Smoke filled the sky and was visible from Killarney town centre, so serious was the blaze, but it was brought under control in under half an hour.
Operations are suspended as fire personnel assess the damage.
Founded in 1973, Tricel was formerly known as Killarney Plastics. Owned and run by the Stack family, it has established operations in 12 countries and its distribution network services over 50 countries worldwide.
