Jones named Fantasy Manager of the Month

FANTASY FOOTBALL expert Alan Jones has picked up the Serie A-dvertiser Manager of the Month Award following a remarkable string of high-scoring gameweeks throughout September.

Jones gladly collected his prize, a €50 voucher for Brian James, from competition sponsor Brian O’Shea, and Advertiser assistant general manager Kieran Healy and sports columnist Adam Moynihan on Wednesday.

Scores of 61, 74 and 90 left him in a good position going into the final weekend of the month and, in the end, his decision to captain Tottenham striker Harry Kane paid off big time.

Kane scored twice against Huddersfield to earn Jones 26 points and when Ben Davies chipped in with a goal, assist and clean sheet in the same game, a big tally was always on the cards.

Further clean sheets from David de Gea, Nicolás Otamendi and namesake Phil Jones helped him to an impressive total of 72.

Jones saw off stiff competition from runner-up Mark O’Keeffe who made a bold choice in triple captaining Kane (39 points), an option only available to managers one time per season. Unfortunately for Mark, his whopping 91-point haul left him with 293, just four off the top spot.

Tom Nolan and John Brendan O’Brien were also in contention but they ultimately came up short by five and six points respectively.

In the overall table, August Manager of the Month Darren O’Mahoney finds himself in joint first with Kevin McCarthy on 457 points, one ahead of Kilcummin footballer Noel Duggan in third. There are currently 374 players in total.

Speaking at the prize-giving, sports columnist Adam Moynihan congratulated Alan on his win.

“Alan was very consistent right throughout September,” he said. “Obviously making Kane captain was crucial but his defenders also earned him a lot of points, and he made the right changes at the right times to get over the line.”

Looking ahead to the coming weeks, Adam reckons it’s a good opportunity for casual players to make a push.

“There are only three gameweeks in October with the international break so it should suit guys who maybe don’t have their eye on the overall title,” he said.

“A couple of decent weeks could put them in contention for a prize at the end of the month.”

When asked if he had any advice for would-be contenders, Adam was reluctant.

“I’m actually doing alright this season but I probably wouldn’t be the best person to ask. If I had any secrets I wouldn’t share them anyway. I have my eye on a suit in Brian James.”

Note: Although points already earned will not be transferred over into this league, new players can still join up and compete for monthly prizes. To join, visit fantasy.premierleague.com or open the app, go to ‘join leagues’ and enter the code: 1796307-430526. Updates will be shared here throughout the season. Best of luck.

Killarney Gardaí await post-mortem results as Muckross Road scene remains cordoned off

Gardaí investigating the discovery of a woman’s body at a residence on Muckross Road in Killarney are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination to determine the direction of their inquiries.

It is understood that a full murder investigation is expected to be launched.

The deceased has been named locally as Jamey Carney, an American national in her 40s and the mother of a 13-year-old girl.

The scene at the domestic residence remains cordoned off today for a full technical examination, with a visible Garda presence continuing at the location.

An incident room has been established at Killarney Garda Station under a Senior Investigating Officer. Local businesses in the area have already begun supplying CCTV footage to assisting officers.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, local councillor Martin Grady expressed the deep sense of shock in the area.

“I want to offer my condolences to the family,” Cllr Grady said. “This is an awful shock to the local community. I encourage anyone to come forward with any information they may have to An Garda Síochána. Whoever committed such a crime is a cowardly person and should get the maximum penalty.”

Gardaí continue to appeal to anyone who was in the Muckross Road area between the evening of Monday, July 6 and the afternoon of Tuesday, July 7 to come forward. They are particularly appealing to road users and business owners who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area during those times.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

Council to monitor bus parking spaces in town centre

Council to monitor bus parking spaces in town centre

Kerry County Council is to monitor the use of town bus parking spaces over the summer months following calls to return specific roadside bays to regular car parking.

The issue was raised by the Mayor of Killarney, John O’Donoghue, at the Killarney Municipal District meeting.
Cllr O’Donoghue asked the Council to monitor town bus parks nightly. He proposed that if these parks are not full, the bus spaces on the Anam Centre side of Railway Road should revert back to car parking.
He said that the roadside area can fit three to four buses, which could instead provide parking spaces for around ten cars.
Cllr O’Donoghue added that town parking is under severe pressure during the summer, particularly with one main car park unavailable for over a month, meaning every extra space would help.
“I do not believe the bus parks in the town to be full very often, so do not see the need for roadside parking in the town,” Cllr O’Donoghue said.
In its official reply, Kerry County Council stated that it continues to monitor bus parking spaces throughout the town. The local authority added that the laybys provided on East Avenue are strictly for bus set-down only, and confirmed that officials will monitor these specific spaces to ensure drivers adhere to the rule.
