Mercedes’ F1-inspired hypercar
T
THE days of road cars built around racing technology was in the past for the most part but Mercedes-AMG unveiled its long awaited Project One, a €2.4 million hypercar stuffed with all the tech that Lewis Hamilton has in his F1 car.
Where the equally pricey Bugatti Chiron summons 1,500 horsepower from an 8-litre W16 engine that can empty a 26-gallon fuel tank in eight minutes, the Project One relies on a tiny 1.6 V6 engine and a few electric motors. Topping out at 217 mph and going from 0 to 60 mph in about 2.6 seconds based on the current F1 technology.
The 1.6 V6 making roughly 700 horsepower at 11,000 rpm, a bit short of the F1 car’s 15,000 rpm. A further 500 horsepower comes from three electric motors—one on each front wheel, the third integrated into the engine. A fourth motor spins the turbocharger to make sure there’s no turbo lag.
Project One’s interior also mimics an F1 car, albeit with the addition of a passenger seat. The steering wheel comes with the host of multi-coloured buttons and dials that the real racers use. Displays include dual 10-inch hi-res LCDs, naturally.
Mercedes says it will make just 275, every one of them sold already, starting production in 2019.
