Two rescued after becoming lost in rhododendron in National Park
T
TWO people were rescued yesterday in Killarney National Park after becoming lost in rhododendron.
The men raised the alarm at 2pm and teams from Kerry Mountain Rescue, Killarney Water Rescue went to the area. The Shannon Coast Guard Helicopter was tasked to
the scene by Valentia Coastguard, with rescue services pinpointing the location by pinging their mobile phones.
The walkers used a tent as a marker for the helicopter but the rhododendron was too thick for the winchman to reach them.
The pair were told to make their way to the shoreline at the Meeting of the Waters where they were picked up by a boat around 4pm.
In January of this year, Killarney Advertiser campaigned on the rhododendron threat to Killarney National Park and called for solution to the problem. Some €200,000 was spent by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in Killarney in trying to contain its spread.
