Greyhound Bar KO Cup Final: Killarney Athletic 3-0 Mitchels Avenue
Killarney Athletic capped a memorable season in style with a comprehensive victory over Mitchels Avenue in the cup final in Tralee on Sunday.
The Blues bossed the game from start to finish and were it not for a man of the match performance from David Hennessy in the Mitchels goal, the scoreline could have been even more emphatic.
Seán Cournane gave Athletic an early lead with a powerful strike and when Shane Lynch doubled the advantage on the half-hour mark, the league champions were well on their way to another famous win.
They created plenty of chances in the second half but it took until the 90th minute to get the third. The impressive Will Courtney broke free before unselfishly squaring to Shane Doolan who made no mistake to make it 3-0 and Athletic were home and hosed.
The victory sealed an extraordinary double on the back of the league final triumph over fierce rivals Killarney Celtic earlier this month.
It has been a truly incredible turnaround. Last season they were on the brink of relegation from Kerry’s top flight before staging a remarkable fightback in the last few games to stay up by a single point.
Sunday’s win over a talented Mitchels Avenue side was a fitting end to what has undoubtedly been the greatest year in the history of the Killarney Athletic AFC.
Athletic team: Brian O’Connor, Conor Farrell, Paudie O’Connor, Eanna Kavanagh, Adam Moynihan, Seán Cournane, Michael O’Donoghue, Shane Doolan, Will Courtney, Shane Lynch and Daithí Casey; subs used: Jamie Doolan, Eamonn Lavin, Brian O’Reilly, Mike Milner and Michael Lindsay.
