AS THE countdown continues to the return of National League Basketball to Killarney this autumn, St Paul's Basketball Club is delighted to announce the appointment of new coach Vojkan Bencic this week.

Serbian native Vojkan comes to Killarney with a wealth of basketball experience as a player and coach. He enjoyed a very successful playing career before establishing himself as a top-class and well-respected coach in several countries including Serbia, Croatia, Tunisia, Bulgaria, Russia, Poland, Slovenia and Hungary.

Vojkan will take up duties as head coach of the St Paul's senior men’s team that will compete in the National League and his presence will also be a huge boost to all the St. Paul's club coaches and underage players.

Returning to National League Basketball after a nine-year absence, St Paul's is confident that the appointment of such a high-calibre coach will help the club progress to become a formidable force in the league. Vojkan is currently working with club officers in recruiting foreign players for the team as well as assembling the local squad of players. Pre-season training will commence in the next few weeks.

Under the direction of club chairman Padraig Weldon and deputy chairpersons Jim Delaney and Elizabeth Switzer, St Paul's Basketball Club will continue to cater for its huge juvenile membership that looks after 400 boys and girls at underage level.

A new national league committee has been formed and this is led by Aidan Quirke, chairman, John Brosnan, vice-chairman, Tracey O’Shea, secretary, Sean Brosnan and Mike Pierce, joint treasurers. This committee is currently working on sponsorship and fundraising initiatives and further announcements will follow in the next few weeks.
