NEXT week promises to be action-packed both on and off the track with a host of celebrities attending the Dawn Milk Ladies Day at the Killarney Races on Thursday, July 20. Top Irish model and Dancing with the Stars contestant Thalia Heffernan will join Kerry football legend and winner of Dancing with Stars Aidan O’Mahony to judge the Dawn Milk Ladies Day 2017.

The style stakes are high at the Killarney Races and the best-dressed lady will win a trip for two to Paris and a specially commissioned crystal vase. A new fashion category for gents has also been introduced this year and the best-dressed gent will receive a trip to Milan for two and a specially commissioned crystal decanter.

Ladies day judge Thalia Heffernan, provided some fashion tips for all ladies attending. “It will be great to see all the ladies out in their fineries and I know it will be so hard to choose a winner,” said Thalia. “I'll be looking for a well-rounded thought-out outfit. I can't wait to see all the contenders! I will be looking for someone confident in their outfit and that will shine through.”

Aidan O’Mahony also provided gents with his fashion tips, stating: “I am looking forward to seeing individual, well-coordinated style on the gents and something that will stand out from the norm. It will be great to see gents getting recognition for their styling efforts as there is a fantastic variety of dapper style to choose from these days. The gents should not shy away from a bit of colour or floral.”

The Dawn Milk Ladies Day at Killarney’s four-day racing festival in July is renowned across the country as one of the most prestigious ladies day events on the fashion calendar in Ireland. A total of ten ladies and ten gents will be selected as finalists by the judges. Ladies and gents are advised to arrive early as the judges will be selecting finalists on the racecourse from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

John O’Sullivan, general manager, Dawn Milk, said: “Dawn Milk is delighted to sponsor Ladies Day at the Killarney Races for 24 years, making it one of the longest ladies day patronages in Ireland. Top judges have been invited year after year to Ladies Day in Killarney and this year is no different. We are delighted to welcome Thalia Heffernan and Aidan O’Mahony. Top luxury prizes to the European style capitals Paris and Milan and specially commissioned crystal can be won by the most stylish ladies and gents attending the Dawn Milk Ladies Day.”

Glamour and glitz were the order of the day as students from St Brendan’s College cut a dash at their annual Debs ball on Monday.

Students gathered for a stylish pre-debs reception at St Brigid’s before being whisked off to the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee, where celebrations continued long into the night.
As much a coming-of-age celebration as the end of an era, the occasion marked the students’ final act together following six years at the town centre college.
With Leaving Certificate results looming, the Class of 2026 now prepares to take their next steps, whether heading off to third-level education, beginning apprenticeships, or entering the workforce. Whatever path they choose, we wish them the very best in all their future endeavours.

Kilcummin man opens New Zealand pub

A Kilcummin native living in New Zealand is appealing to the Kerry community for genuine local memorabilia to decorate his new Irish pub and deli on the other side of the world.

Cian Curtin and his wife are currently fitting out The Snug, a new venture located in New Brighton, a seaside suburb of Christchurch. By day, the venue will operate as a deli serving Irish staples such as breakfast rolls, chicken fillet rolls, home-made soda bread, and fresh milk. In the evenings, it will transform into a traditional neighbourhood pub featuring Irish food, drink, and live music.
Determined to create an authentic atmosphere rather than relying on generic decorations, Cian is calling on Kerry locals, businesses, and sports clubs to send over items with a real story behind them.
“Being from Kilcummin, there’ll naturally be plenty of Kerry influence around the place. One thing that’s particularly important to me is that the pub doesn’t end up filled with generic, newly made ‘Irish pub’ decorations. I’d much rather fill the walls gradually with genuine pieces from home that have a bit of history and a story behind them. If any local pubs, clubs, businesses or readers had an old sign, photograph, jersey, bar piece or other bit of Kerry memorabilia gathering dust that they thought deserved a new home on the other side of the world, I’d absolutely love to hear from them.”
