A LIVELY rendition of the sparkling number The Sun Has Got His Hat on was one of the show-stopping performances at Killarney Musical Society’s production of Me and My Girl in the INEC in March and it was a case of life imitating art as the talented troupe returned in June sunshine to the venue where they joined their counterparts from musical societies across Ireland.

The glamour and fun of the Association of Musical Societies (AIMS) annual awards spilled into the grounds that evening when over 1,300 members cheered and clapped as the winners were announced by MC Fergal D’Arcy.

Colm Moules, AIMS president, made a special presentation to Patrick O'Donoghue and Breffni Ingerton of The Gleneagle Hotel to mark the hotel's 60 years of Irish hospitality on the occasion of the association's 14th consecutive year holding their annual awards in the INEC.

There were celebrations on home ground for Killarney Musical Society, as Paddie Keogh, representing John O’Brien, received the runner-up award for Best Musical Director/Gilbert Section for Me and My Girl.

John Hurley, Tralee Musical Society, was the winner of the Best Technical /Gilbert Section for the production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
There were double award wins for a number of musical societies in the Sullivan Section with UCD Musical Society, Dublin taking home, Best Actress for Derry Keeling and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Colin Gilligan for Parade.

New Ross Musical Society were singing in the aisle as Singing in the Rain was awarded two awards for Best Comedienne for Caroline O’Connell and Best Director for Derek Shannon. Clara Musical Society claimed Best Visual and the much coveted title of Best Overall Show in the Sullivan Section for their spellbinding production of Cats with runners up Twin Productions for their hilarious production of Spamalot.

Ukrainian Olympian joins parkrun for annual Chestnut Run

It is not every day an Olympian joins the Killarney parkrun, but participants had exactly that experience last Saturday, when two-time Ukrainian Olympic skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych joined the event at Killarney House and Gardens.

Heraskevych completed the 5km route alongside members of both the local and Ukrainian communities as part of the annual Ukrainian Chestnut Run. The charity tradition originated in Kyiv 33 years ago and has been organised locally by the Killarney Ukrainian community for the past four years.
The athlete previously captured global attention at the 2026 Winter Games in Milan-Cortina with his “Helmet of Memory” tribute to fallen athletes.
His appearance in Killarney was part of a week-long tour of athletic and educational centres across south-west Ireland. He spent Friday night in Tralee ahead of the Saturday morning run. During his stay in the region, Heraskevych visited the MTU Tralee campus to meet with students, researchers, and local representatives to discuss sports diplomacy, sustainability, and inclusive sports.
