FESTIVALGOERS throughout Kerry and the South of France will be tapping their feet to the delightful sounds of The Gleneagle Concert Band this summer.

The band will be performing at all the big festivals in the county in the next couple of months – Killarney's 4th of July Festival, Puck Fair and The Rose of Tralee.

Band manager Ciaran Lynch said: "The 4th of July Festival in Killarney will certainly be a highlight for us as we will be joined by our good friends in The Blarney Brass and Reed Band for a massed band performance at 7pm. This performance takes place on Main Street and we encourage everyone to come along to hear how fantastic the big band sound really is."

The Gleneagle Concert Band will also be undertaking a joint concert tour with the Blarney Brass and Reed Band to the South of France in August. The Killarney based community band now in its 36th year will perform two joint concerts in Monaco and Cannes under the baton of band conductor Vincent Condon.

This will be the band’s sixth foreign tour following on from visits to Holland in 1985, Germany in 1989, Austria in 2002, Paris in 2007 and Lisbon in 2013.

Band conductor Vincent Condon commented: “The band will perform two open-air concerts in the centre of Monaco and Cannes. This will be a wonderful spectacle as between our own band and the Blarney Brass and Reed Band there will be close to 100 musicians performing on stage.”

The Gleneagle Concert Band and School of Music is currently enrolling new students for September 2017 for children aged 8 upwards. High quality instruments are supplied free of charge on a first come first served basis to students. Individual instrumentals lessons and music theory classes are provided by professionally qualified teachers.

Classes cover clarinet, flute, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, drums/percussion, singing and piano.

Parents who wish to enrol their child in lessons in The Gleneagle School of Music and/or as a member of The Gleneagle Concert Band (past members and adults with previous musical experience are also welcome to join the band) should phone 087-2229513. Killarney is in the grip of ‘Oscar fever’ this week as the town rallies behind local star Jessie Buckley ahead of the 98th Academy Awards on March 15.

The Killarney native is considered the runaway frontrunner to take home the prize for Best Actress for her performance as Agnes Shakespeare in the film Hamnet.
The town’s pride was officially voiced at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.
Mayor Martin Grady led the tributes, praising Buckley’s extraordinary run this awards season. He highlighted her recent string of victories, which includes the BAFTA for Best Leading Actres, making her the first Irish woman to ever win the category and her IFTA win for the same role in Dublin last month. Mayor Grady also noted her historic win at the Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards) in Los Angeles last Sunday, where she again took top honours for her portrayal of Agnes.
“Hopefully she will bring home the big one,” he said.
Cllr Brendan Cronin and Cllr John O’Donoghue echoed the Mayor’s support.

Killarney rail journeys hit all-time high

Rail travel on the Tralee to Cork/Dublin line, which serves Killarney station, reached a record-breaking high in 2025.

New figures from Iarnród Éireann show that demand on the route surged to 962,000 journeys last year, an 8.3% increase over the previous 12 months.
This total surpassed the 2024 record of 888,000 journeys for the Kerry service. Nationally, the rail network also saw its busiest year ever, recording 55 million total journeys across Intercity, Commuter, and DART services.
Iarnród Éireann Chief Executive Mary Considine welcomed the figures, stating they demonstrate a clear appetite for high-quality public transport. She noted that as volumes continue to grow in 2026, the company is focused on expanding services and investing in new trains and station upgrades.
The record numbers come as the rail provider looks toward a more sustainable future, with plans to use the rail network as the backbone for transport and housing development under the All-Island Strategic Rail Review.
