Meeke and Nagle fail to capitalise on their advantage

KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle crashed out on day one of last weekend’s World Rally Championship opener in Monte Carlo, failing to capitalise on extensive preseason testing Citroen's new generation WR car.

They re-joined on Saturday under rally 2 rules (regulations that allow a driver who retires from an event to re-enter the next day at the cost of a five-minute time penalty), only to be hit by another car on a road section between stages, forcing the pair to retire immediately from the event.

The eventual winner was M-Sport’s late signing, Sebastian Ogier, in the new generation Ford Fiesta WRC. He was joined on the podium by his ex-teammate Jarri Matti Latvala in a Toyota Yaris WRC, Toyota returning to the WRC after an 18-year absence. The final step was occupied by Ogier’s current teammate Ott Tanak.

Kris Meeke’s Citroen teammate Craig Breen from Waterford finished fifth overall in a 2016 generation Citroen DS3 WR car. The next round is Rally Sweden, from February 10 to 12.

The annual Killarney Regatta Dance took place on September 25 as rowers, families and supporters came together to celebrate their successful year.

The racing was cancelled in September due to bad weather.

The Killarney Regatta is one of Ireland’s oldest rowing events, having first begun in 1788.

The dance took place at the Killarney Oaks Hotel where there was a lot of excitement and fun. Six rowing clubs, Fossa, Workman’s, St Brendan’s, Commercials, Flesk Valley, and Muckross, came together to celebrate the community and its shared history.

Amelia Counihan was crowned as the Regatta Queen.

The Queen represents the spirit pride and grace of the rowing community and has been a tradition in the club for generations.

Workman’s Rowing Club congratulated Amelia and described her as a woman who embodies everything that their tradition stands for.

The club said: “Queen is more than a title — it is a celebration of history, community, and the spirit of Killarney rowing.”
