Killarney Rugby Club and Douglas under-16s finish on an even keel

U16s: Killarney travelled to Douglas last Saturday for this the third-round Bowl competition league game, missing three first-choice locks, and still raw from last week’s defeat to Dolphin. With just one novice replacement travelling this was going to be a tough encounter. With Killarney receiving the kick off and immediately turning over the ball, newcomer Evan Smith managed to snaffle a loose ball from the ensuing Douglas ruck to score under the posts all within 30 seconds, Cian Murphy converted.

The training session during the week obviously gave good reward, as Killarney repelled a much bigger pack, time and again, until the 25th minute when Douglas touched down between the posts, remarkably missing the conversion, Killarney led 7-5 at half-time. Douglas had the luxury of a strong bench, and the game ebbed and flowed without any scores by either side, both sizing up the other. Douglas pressed and brought on a couple of big guns, and finally scored out wide in the 45th minute; score 10-7 to Douglas.

With 10 minutes remaining an uncharacteristic, high tackle saw captain Richard Wallace binned, Douglas must have felt that, they could hang on with time almost up. Krystian Komosa made amends for his earlier binning, and took a strong outside line, to score about ten metres in from touch, unfortunately the conversion was missed, leaving the final score 17-17. Killarney now have played three games on the road, and have accrued 6 points out of a possible 12; hopefully enough to see a playoff place with two games in hand. Next weekend is a free weekend for a much-deserved break. Training as usual on Thursday.

U18s
Killarney RFC 29, Rugbai Ch orca Dhuibhne 32. Killarney saved their best performance of the Season for this Bowl encounter against their West Kerry rivals. Clement weather conditions made for fast open rugby on Aghadoe's expansive pitch.
The hosts struck first through man-of-the-match Alan Lynch, who scythed through the Corca Dhuibhne defence and Kieran O'Connor converted. Corca Dhuibhne responded immediately with their own seven pointer. After that both teams swapped scores in a gripping entertaining contest.

Killarney led at the break following a try from Kieran O'Connor brilliantly crafted by Alan Murphy. Thomas McCloskey added another before Corca Dhuibhne replied with a second try. The visitors powered ahead in the second half but had to withstand a ferocious Killarney rally which yielded two tries from Dylan McCarthy and Alan Harte, One of which was converted by Kieran O' Connor. Corca Dhuibhne just about deserved their victory in a sporting epic encounter. Best for Killarney were Alan Lynch, Alan Harte and Thomas McCloskey. Next weekend we are due to replay our voided fixture against Abbeyfeale/Castleisland.

Seniors
Our seniors took the long trip Bantry, for the next round of the Munster Junior League, full of confidence after the excellent display against Douglas at Aghadoe last Sunday week. Ger Moynihan's charges travelled in the hope of securing vital points against the West Cork outfit who are struggling in the division this season so far. A good match ensued with Killarney getting out of the blocks quickest as Paudie Sheahan crossed the line for the visitors first try.

Cha Johnson followed with a try of his own and Paudie added to his tally with 2 penalties and 1 conversion on the day. A great result for the lads as they prepare to take on fellow Martin O'Sullivan Cup finalists next weekend at Aghadoe. This should be a great game as the lads look to continue the good form of late. With Killarney now up to 4th in the division, and the lads playing some great rugby things are well and truly looking good for the club.

Minis
Next weekend, our minis travel the short trip to Ballymalis in Listry for the next round of the West Munster Blitz. The kids are really looking forward to taking on teams from Killorglin, Castleisland and Listowel as they put all their skills into practise. Playing in blitzes helps the minis hone their skills and play against other clubs, representing the Black and Red of Killarney RFC. We will not be taking a bus to the blitz and parking will be provided onsite and at the nearby Kerry Woollen Mills. So, come along and support the kids as they represent the club with pride and have some great fun along the way!

A new comedy play by Glengariff playwright Ray O’Sullivan will come to Killarney next month as part of a regional tour.

Robbed! will be staged at the Gleneagle Club on Saturday, February 7, at 8.30pm, presented by the Killarney Theatre Company.

The production is the group’s fifth in a popular series of homegrown plays and follows the success of The Rise and Rise of the Healy-Raes, A Papal Blessing, Weight Watching and Stones.

The play centres on a failed GAA player who finds himself caught in a series of misunderstandings involving relationships, bingo balls and a robbery that quickly spirals out of control.

As events unfold, nothing goes to plan and the situation descends into chaos.

Rehearsals have been ongoing since October and the cast includes Ray O’Sullivan himself alongside Rosie Healy and DB O’Connor. Robbed! is O’Sullivan’s fifth full-length play and is expected to attract strong audiences across the tour.

Tickets cost €15 and are available from Ray O’Sullivan on 087 2279657 or from the Gleneagle on 064 667155.

The tour begins in Scartaglen Hertiage Centre on January 17, The Ivy Leaf Theatre Castleisland, on January 29, The Glen Theatre Banteer on January 31, Foilmore Community Centre Sunday February 1, Killorglin CYMS, February 5, Abbeydorney Community Centre February 12 and Bantry Westlodge Hotel February 21.

Kerry FC took the unusual step of playing a pre-season friendly in Killarney during the week as they faced local club Killarney Celtic in a match organised to raise funds for Palliative Care.

It marked a rare appearance in the town for the county’s League of Ireland side and drew strong local interest.
Kerry started brightly and were ahead within the opening minutes, setting the tone for an open and competitive contest. Their early pressure was rewarded again in the 21st minute when Ballyduff native Sean McGrath doubled the lead. The game was played at a high tempo, with both sides creating chances and enjoying spells of possession.
Luke Doolan was central to Kerry’s play throughout the first half, linking defence and attack and providing energy in midfield. Kerry continued to threaten down both flanks, while Killarney Celtic responded with a series of corners and set pieces, delivered with pace into the penalty area.
Celtic reduced the deficit in the 25th minute with a well-taken free kick from just outside the box, bringing the score back to 2–1 and lifting the home support. Kerry responded in the 36th minute with a powerful strike to restore their two-goal advantage, but Celtic continued to press and were rewarded again shortly after. Debutant goalkeeper Harry Halwax produced an excellent save, with the ball coming back off the crossbar, but the rebound was turned in to make it 3–2.
Kerry looked unsettled for a brief spell as Celtic pushed forward, but just before half-time Doolan struck again with a composed finish to give Kerry a 4–2 lead at the break.
The second half saw Kerry take greater control of the game, keeping possession well and limiting Celtic to crosses from wide areas. While the home side increased their physical approach, the match remained free of disciplinary issues. Kerry made several changes in the 78th minute, including the introduction of Daniel Okwute, who impressed last season.
Halwax was forced off through injury and replaced by Killorglin native Darragh Foley, who settled quickly. Kerry added a fifth goal late on to seal a 5–2 win, though Killarney Celtic continued to compete until the final whistle.
After the match, both Okwute and Foley spoke positively about the season ahead, expressing confidence in the squad and belief that Kerry FC can challenge any opponent.
