Why Fr Kevin lashed out at the Bandits
M
MOYVANE parish priest Fr Kevin McNamara has lodged a complaint with the Broadcasting Authority after Holy Communion was called “haunted bread” on air.
Fr Kevin said the “ridiculing of the Eucharist” had left him “hurt beyond words”.
The description was used by Blindboy Boatclub of The Rubberbandits on RTE’s Late Late Show on January 6 – the Feast of the Epiphany.
Fr McNamara, who ministered for many years in here in Killarney parish, criticised the comments made by the comedian, who's real name is David Chambers.
The Moyvane PP said: “During a discussion about whether religious practice, long in decline, might be on the rise, David Chambers said young people attending Midnight Mass at Christmas were ‘not going there for haunted bread, but because it was a family event. Everyone at Midnight Mass is half-cut anyway’.
Fr Kevin, who is a former curate of Rathmore/Gneeveguilla, added: “It hurt me beyond words to see the Eucharist ridiculed on RTÉ’s so-called flagship chat show.”
