IT'S absolutely biting cold outside this evening and it's putting thoughts into our heads of that extra-enchanting time of year. While the jingle bells have yet to tinkle, the whispers of those hard-working elves on the Christmas in Killarney team have reached us and we are assured that the 2016 festival is poised to be the most magical yet.

One new aspect is the Christmas Island, which will be located at Kenmare Place, opposite Cinema Killarney on the Ha Ha.

Now in its 12th year Christmas in Killarney has grown into a thriving festival attracting people from all over the country to Killarney who wish to rediscover the magic of Christmas in one of the most beautiful settings in Ireland.

Kickstarting the Christmas in Killarney celebrations will be the highly anticipated Magic Parade. “Santa and his elves along with favourite Disney characters will travel through the town for the turning on of the town lights ceremony on Friday, November 25, at 6pm,” said a spokesperson for the Christmas in Killarney committee

You will also get to see Santa in the Magic Parade on each of the following Saturdays: December 3, 10 and 17 at 6pm. Santa and his elves will return for a finale parade on New Year’s Eve at 6pm for anyone who did not make it home to Killarney before Christmas.

New to the 2016 festival is Christmas Island. Come along and meet Santa in the heart of Killarney town, enjoy a Christmas funfair ride, make a wish on the Christmas wishing wall, post off that all-important letter to the North Pole and visit the life-size crib. Christmas Island is located at Kenmare Place Killarney opposite Cinema Killarney on the Ha Ha.

This year will see the return of the hugely successful Killarney on Ice, Kerry’s only ice rink. What better way to soak up the Christmas atmosphere by skating on real ice.

A taste of what is to come in this year’s festival programme of events include The Christmas Craft & Food Fair which takes place on Sunday, November 27, Dine in Killarney restaurant nights on December 1 and 8, the Welcome Home Disco as well as the annual Christmas In Killarney Designer Fashion Event will be held at the five-star award-winning Europe Hotel on November 17.

Biddy’s Day festival returns to Mid-Kerry

Published

The Mid-Kerry Biddy’s Day Festival began yesterday and is running until February 2.

The festival is taking place across Killorglin, Cromane and the wider Mid-Kerry region, bringing together craft, music, language, ritual and community in the lead-up to St Brigid’s Day.

At the heart of the festival is the ancient Biddy tradition, rooted in Imbolc and the honouring of St Brigid, a time associated with light, renewal, creativity and protection.

Over twelve days, the festival offers a wide mix of family-friendly, traditional and contemporary events, culminating in its most anticipated moment of the year: The Biddy’s Parade.

The parade, taking place on Saturday January 31,is the centrepiece and defining event of the festival.

On parade night, Killorglin town is transformed as Biddy groups from across Mid-Kerry gather in straw hats and traditional costume, carrying Brídeógs through the streets in a powerful procession of fire, music, movement and celebration.

The parade is free, open to all to join in or support, and remains one of the most atmospheric and visually striking expressions of living Irish folklore in the country.

Fire performers, live music and street celebrations follow, before the night continues into the town’s venues.

Founded in 2017, the Mid-Kerry Biddy’s Day Festival has been instrumental in reviving a tradition that had been in serious decline.

From just two active Biddy groups less than a decade ago, the region now supports a growing network of groups, with children, families and new communities actively involved.

The 2026 festival continues this work, blending heritage with creativity and ensuring the tradition remains relevant, inclusive and alive.
