CYCLING EVENT: Anna Pokojska winning her bronze for the 30km cycling event

By Sean Moriarty

Killarney’s Anna Pokojska took bronze in the 30km Cycle Road Race at the World Transplant Games in Gateshead England on Tuesday.

Anna, who received a kidney transplant in 2017, is attending the World Transplant Games for the first time.
She prepared for the world games by tackling last month’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.

Originally from Poland but residing in Ireland since 2006, she contested the 30-39 years category in cycling the 30k Road Race on Tuesday and taking part in the 5k Mini-Marathon on Sunday.

She finished fourth in her age category on the 5k run but on combined times across all age groups Ireland took silver in the team results.

“I am delighted,” Anna told the Killarney Advertiser on Tuesday, not long after completing her cycle race. “I would have been happy just to finish the cycle race as this is my first games. It is such an amazing event. I am doing this for myself and also for my donor. I am so happy just to be here and I would not be here without my donor.”

Anna received a kidney transplant in 2017 after six months on dialysis. After surgery she took up walking and then cycling to ease the pain. She only took up competitive running in March this year.

The closing ceremony takes place in Gateshead later today (Friday) and Team Ireland are due in Dublin Airport around lunchtime tomorrow (Saturday).

Dr Crokes team of 2000: The reunion

Published

Recently, the Dr Crokes team of 2000, who won the Kerry senior football championship of that same year, re-united and looked back on fond memories of their glory days and that very special year when they beat An Ghaeltact in the final at Austin Stack Park.

On November 26, 2000, Dr Crokes faced An Ghaeltacht and defeated the Dingle-based side.

It was no easy task making the final for the Killarney side, despite having talent such as captain Roland Neher, Eoin Brosnan, and a 17-year-old Colm Cooper at the start of his illustrious career.

Before the final, Crokes defeated Killarney Legion (preliminary round), South Kerry (round-one), Rathmore (quarter-final), and narrowly defeated West Kerry by a point in the semi-final (1-08 – 1-07).

It was the first time An Ghaeltacht had qualified for the final, but this was no happy welcome for the Dingle side, as the Killarney-based side won their ninth title.

Like in the semi-final, Dr Crokes won by a point as they scarcely won by 1-04 – 0-06.

Despite Dara Ó Cinnéide ending the tournament as top-scorer with 3-20, he was unable to carry his Dingle side to victory with the Killarney side being superior.

Neher led his team out onto the pitch, and he inspiringly helped push his team to victory.

This ensured Harry O’Neill’s versatile and developed squad deserved every bit of praise for them.
